Snyder Opticians was originally founded in 1937 by my grandfather, Charles
Snyder, who owned a pharmacy in West Philadelphia at 52nd
and Jefferson Sts. since about 1920. My father, Dr. Elmer
Snyder, joined the business in 1946 upon his graduation
from the Philadelphia School of Optometry. While operating
primarily as wholesale laboratory fabricating eyewear
for various eye doctors in the city, Snyder Optical began
serving the general public with eye exams and eyewear
in 1946 on 10th Street near Walnut.
In 1974 we moved to our current location on 17th Street
near Rittenhouse Square and our business became 99% a
retail operation. I joined the company full time in 1979,
having learned the business under my father's tutelage
and from days of playing in the old lab as a child, truly
starting from the ground up. From 1979 until my father's
retirement in 1991, we also ran an optical shop in Wynnewood,
PA. That location was closed upon his retirement and my
full attention returned the Center City store. Currently,
my wife and I are celebrating our 70th year of serving
the metro Philadelphia area.
